Magazine editor, David Lillywhite, will join 55 other aspiring racing drivers in the UK’s premier entry-level series purely for novices, which will be known as the Octane Caterham Academy.
Octane is the magazine of choice for classic car enthusiasts across Europe, with a circulation of 37,000 every month.
Throughout 2012, Octane will keep motorsport enthusiasts abreast of the unique Academy’s season, with articles appearing both in print and on Octane’s popular website.
The Academy has created almost 1,000 brand new racing drivers since its inception in 1995 and remains the most popular way for aspiring racers to take their first steps into entry-level motor racing.
The season-long campaign takes drivers through the process of gaining their race license, as well as their first full season of competition, including a structured progression through sprints and circuit races.
Mr Lillywhite said: “The Caterham Academy is the perfect way for novices to get into racing – I can’t wait for the season to get underway.
“When Octane was approached to team up, the response was immediate. Caterham, with its rich heritage, is a perfect match for Octane and the Academy will be a good test for me as a driver. You’ll be able to follow my progress in the magazine, on our website and via facebook and Twitter.”
Caterham Motorsport recently won the BRSCC’s prestigious John Nicol Memorial Trophy for its innovative work with the Academy, which club chairman, Bernard Cottrell, described as “the most successful starter series in Europe, probably in the world”. Having sold out for 17 consecutive years, the Academy is still attracting plenty of new drivers, with the first six competitors for 2013 already signed up.
The Academy season gets underway with a sprint event at Aintree on Saturday, April 28.
